I wanna be a Locavore

I am a LocavoreI was surfing my Reader today and came across an article about a Brooklyn man who was a Locavore and found it strange that his tough-talking plumber was too squeamish to watch chickens be killed for supper. Um, yeah that got my interest! What the hell is a Locavore?

“locavores” — people who try to eat only locally produced food.

That’s a pretty cool idea. Ever since I started taking the bus to work, and in Texas that’s a H U G E deal, I’ve been thinking of ways to conserve energy and lessen my carbon footprint (if you’re interested in your footprint take the survey). The idea of eating only locally produced food seems pretty interesting. That would be a good way to help lower my carbon footprint. L and I signed up for a service a while back that brought local veggies to your house but the produce wasn’t very good and by the time we ate it all most of it had started to spoil.

One of the major drawbacks to the service was produce sat outside by the front door all day and by the time we got home some of the veggies began to wilt. In the Texas summer months fruit and vegetables do not last long outside. So, we canceled it.

However, now that we’re in a new house and we’re trying to lessen our carbon footprint I think maybe L and I should try it again, we could then begin to call ourselves Locavorists or something like that, ok, I’m just making words up now but the idea sounds doable. To find out more about what a Locavore is, hit their website and see if you can eat locally gown produce for one month!
