And You’ll Need a Permit for That

Today I had 3 plumbers and 2 AC guys come by the house to give me estimates on certain portions of the remodel. I’m trying to move my attic stair, which is proving to be a very complicated process I might add, and need someone to re-route one of my main ducts. Next I’m trying to move my toilet 13 inches, re-route several venting pipes and re-route plumbing to a new wall. All of which is a big deal and is compounded by the fact almost everyone one of these guys wanted a permit to do any work!!

Now, I’m not apposed to permits, in fact I like them. It’s ensures that work gets done right the first time and up to building codes, etc… However, in my case, if I had a building inspector come to inspect for the AC or Plumbing and see all the old plumbing and AC work previously done, I’d have to redo EVERYTHING in that bathroom and I just simply can’t afford that.

Therefore, I need to do this work sans-permit but still have quality work. I hope that I can get a decent bid for work that will be quality and not cost me an arm and a leg.

Rule # 123,456: when buying a house, if it’s been remodeled ask to see the permits on the work done before agreeing to the purchase of the house. It could save you a lot of money and maybe even your life!

On a side note, I found it very interesting how all the plumbers were smirking at the previous work done. One of them even said, "We live in a city right? This is Austin, Texas, right?", implying that the plumbing job was soo back-ass-wards that he couldn’t believe that someone still did plumbing like that. At first I was shocked, then angered, and after about the 3rd plumber’s comment I just quit thinking about it.

Shut up and just give me an estimate..
