Well, I’ve finally joined the ranks of Smart phone users across the globe! I hemmed and hawked at sprint and they finally gave me a Smart Phone for what was quite a deal. It’s kind of an interesting story because I basically told Sprint that it would be cheaper to cancel my service than to get a new phone with them. And since I have been with them almost 8 years they finally gave in (after I contacted their cancelation department, where it’s their job to try all they can do to keep customers) and they gave me a great phone at a really good price.
Anyways, this post isn’t about Sprint, they still suck, just less in my mind than they use to. So, the phone; I got the Motorola Q9C and for my first Smart Phone it packs a wallop! I simply cannot believe I’ve gone this long without one!
To me, it’s like when I first had sex. I thought I knew what it was like but really, really I didn’t. Man, I can’t believe I waited so long to get one. I can check all my emails; I mean all 64 of em, all on the phone and I can surf the web, well sort of and, oh yeah make phone calls too. I can use the phone as a GPS device, check Google maps while I’m traveling (which I did last week), play movies on Youtube and get all the latest highlights from NCAA tournaments! It’s unreal the things you can do when you’re driving in your car during rush hour traffic with your new Smart Phone.
I literally feel like I’ve been in the dark ages and now I see the light. Being a web designer I feel a little like the shoe cobbler’s wife. Ya know, how the wife has the worst shoes..Anyways, now I’ve seen the light and I think that it will actually impact my designs. I want to make all my sites mobile friendly because it’s still a pain in the ass to really surf sites. The only one who I think really gets it is Yahoo! with Opera in close second then Google and Firefox bringing up the rear. The mobile web is really, and I mean really, in its infantile stages.
The only real downside to this phone is its OS. It’s on M$ Mobile 6.0 or some shit like that and the interface is a little like using a bar of soap to cut hair. First thing I wanted to do when I go the phone was see how I can hack it so I can get Firefox running. So far I’ve only gotten Opera installed and that’s still a hack. They should try to make this OS more like a desk top app, they have all the keys and CPU power, gotta be easy right?
Point is, if you don’t have a Smart Phone or PDA, go right now and get one. It’ll change the way you interact with your electronic world. Wonder if I can stream audio on this thing?
